Almasi

Two new reports and advocacy materials available

ALMASI begins 2026 with three completed deliverables and a wealth of new research and resources to advance and strengthen Diamond OA in Africa, Europe, and Latin America. We hope that these resources will be useful to the global community.

The Scoping Report on Non-for-profit Publishing Ecosystems establishes common terminology for ALMASI’s work on Diamond OA and overviews current knowledge in the three regions. The analysis in this report collects what we know about funding mechanisms, organisational structures and governance models, platforms, solutions and services, and output types for Diamond OA in Africa, Europe, and Latin America.

The Landscape Report on Diamond OA Publishing in Africa, Europe, and Latin America describes conditions and policies for this community-owned, no-fee scholarly publishing model in 45 countries. For each country, this report covers legal frameworks, policies, funding mechanisms, incentives and recognition systems, digital infrastructures and platforms, institutional support, human resources, collaboration, quality certification, and actions required to develop and strengthen Diamond OA in that national context. This report finds that the future of Diamond OA does not depend solely on publishing incentives, but on high-level policy decisions that recognise scholarly publishing as a global public good. Furthermore, even though Africa, Europe, and Latin America face common challenges, policy responses must be context-specific to each region. Six recommendations come out of this report to help the community take action.

The Advocacy Materials for Diamond OA: crucial resources ALMASI needs to move forward with various stakeholders in the next two years of the project. This resource includes a database of talking points to advocate for Diamond OA to different stakeholders, a series of advocacy videoclips, and a guide for organising advocacy events. These resources are beneficial to all who seek to increase Diamond OA adoption, supportive policy, and funding.

Upcoming ALMASI project events will introduce with these resources to the community and help them to engage with ALMASI’s work on developing a nonprofit, high-quality, and sustainable scholarly communication ecosystem across Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
